About the role
The Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust provides high‑quality, patient‑centred care across our hospital sites in Wakefield, Pontefract and Dewsbury. Our Pharmacy team plays a crucial role in supporting the safe and effective use of medicines, and we remain committed to innovation, professional development and delivering excellent clinical outcomes.
We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Specialist Pharmacy Technician to step into this established role. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to high‑impact patient care, support ongoing service improvements, and play a key role in the continued delivery of our Medicines Optimisation services.
Main duties
- Manage and schedule, on a day-to-day basis, the workload of the Medicines Optimisation section in accordance with established policies.
- Supervise all technical staff working in the Medicines Optimisation section.
- Participate in planning and developing enhancements to the service provided for Medicines Optimisation.
- Review service performance with Ward Managers and arrange any necessary modification and/or extension of the Medicines Optimisation service.
- Perform Individual Performance Reviews for Pharmacy Technicians and Support Workers.
- Participate in the recruitment and selection of new Technical and Support staff.
- Contribute to departmental forward planning.
- Represent the Trust at appropriate Regional forum.
- Direct and supervise pre-registration and junior Pharmacists working in the service area.
- Monitor daily staffing availability and make any necessary adjustments to the planned rotas.
- Provide cover for other Specialist Technicians when required.
- Write Standard Operating Procedures and comment on other specialised procedures.
- Authorise annual leave for allocated staff.
Essential person specification requirements
- Registrant of General Pharmaceutical Council
- BTEC in Pharmaceutical Science or NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services or A GPhC recognised equivalent qualification.
- Management training at a foundation level
- Accredited Checking Technician qualification
- Extensive Medicines Optimisation experience in a clinical setting.
- Evidence of post registration CPD
- Knowledge of clinical practice and experience of medication history taking
- Understanding of relevant NHS/government policy
- Experience of Managing change.
- Knowledge of dealing with complaints and Incident/ error reporting.
- Extensive post qualification experience in hospital at Pharmacy Technician higher level.
- Experience of service development or project management.
